King Midas and the Golden Touch
Once upon a time, in the ancient kingdom of Phrygia, there lived a wealthy and powerful king named Midas. King Midas was known for his love of gold and riches. His greatest wish was to have even more wealth.
One day, as he was walking in his beautiful garden, he came across a drunken man named Silenus. Silenus was a follower of the god Dionysus and had gotten lost while following the god’s procession.
King Midas, known for his hospitality, welcomed Silenus into his palace. He treated him with great care and hospitality for ten days. Dionysus, the god of wine and revelry, was pleased with Midas’s kindness to his follower. As a reward, Dionysus offered to grant Midas a single wish, whatever he desired.
Without much thought, King Midas wished for the golden touch. He wanted everything he touched to turn into gold. Dionysus tried to dissuade him, warning him that this wish might bring him sorrow, but Midas was adamant.
Dionysus granted Midas’s wish, and the king was initially delighted. He touched a tree, and it turned into solid gold. He touched his palace, and it gleamed with a brilliant golden hue. He touched various objects, turning them all into gold. King Midas was overjoyed with his newfound power.
However, his joy quickly turned to despair. When he tried to eat, the food turned to gold in his hands. When he tried to hug his daughter, she too was transformed into a lifeless golden statue. Realizing the gravity of his wish, King Midas begged Dionysus to remove the golden touch.
Dionysus, in his mercy, agreed to reverse the wish but on one condition: King Midas had to promise never to be greedy again and to cherish the things that truly mattered in life.
Midas readily agreed, and Dionysus instructed him to wash his hands in the river Pactolus. As he did, the golden touch left him, and the river’s sands turned into gold, hence giving rise to the legend of the golden sands of the Pactolus River.
King Midas learned a valuable lesson about the true worth of wealth and the importance of family and simple pleasures over material riches. He ruled his kingdom wisely, always remembering the lesson of the golden touch.
